Enlightening hearts and minds for the future…
The preschool program at Presentation of Mary Academy includes students in pre-kindergarten (3 year olds) through kindergarten (5 year olds). The classrooms – each with full-time teachers and aides– are rich in materials and activities that tap into children’s natural sense of wonder, invite creativity, promote joy in learning, and nurture the development of ideas. We encourage a sense of self-reliance and independence, and build classroom communities that foster cooperative relationships.
Teachers select engaging topics for investigation that deepen children’s understanding of themselves and the world around them. These investigations integrate Christian values, knowledge and skills, provide opportunities for individual and cooperative group work, and encourage children to analyze, theorize, and ask questions. Learning occurs through age appropriate academic lessons and a variety of hands-on activities with children acting as researchers and reflecting on their experiences. Topics of recent in-depth explorations include health, teeth, balance and motion, ants, weather, farm animals, and communities.
We lay the foundation for a love of books and reading, while introducing age-appropriate reading skills. We build on children’s prior knowledge and help them learn that language is an important tool for conveying meaning and sharing thoughts and feelings.
Mathematics is one of the many tools that children use to explore and describe their environment and engage in problem solving. Children identify patterns and relationships among shapes and numbers, find practical uses for math, and engage in focused skill-building activities.
Each week, children meet with special subject teachers in Art, Music, Spanish and Library. In Physical Education, students enjoy games promoting body awareness and coordination, and Modern Language teachers introduce Spanish. We use the outdoors as an extension of the classroom where children can explore their own ideas, exercise their bodies, and use their imaginations.
Children are taught to be thoughtful members of their classroom community. Sharing ideas, speaking up for their needs, and listening to the contributions of their classmates form the basis for negotiation, compromise, and building healthy relationships. The diversity of their backgrounds and traditions is essential to the program, as the children learn with each other and from each other.
In every grade, Presentation of Mary educates the whole child in the spiritual, social-emotional, physical, and cognitive domains. Our students are encouraged to explore ideas and solve problems confidently, and supported in developing a life-long love of learning.
We offer three day (MWF) and five day (M-F) options with a half day (8:10am-11:30am) or full day (8:10am-1:55pm).
